A Call to Take a Stand; Family Violence and Women’s Abuse Not Only a Woman’s Issue PDF Print E-mail

The issues of family violence and women’s abuse are ones that we can no longer ignore in hopes of it going away. These issues are perceived in our society as women’s issues and that perception needs to change. The issues of family violence and women’s abuse are just as much men’s as it is women’s. It is men who commit 99% of these atrocities, not women. As a volunteer with the John Howard Society, I have seen firsthand the damage violence causes in a family especially with children. So I’m here before you to make you aware that a small shift in that perception has started to take place here in Prince George.

Here in Prince George there are a handful of men that have come together with The John Howard Society with the goals of helping men stop their violence and continue to help shift these perceptions. We call ourselves "The Warriors", and our group is lead by Tom Wainwright, a man I look up to as a mentor and a leader here in our community.

I was taught to always to wash my hands after sneezing, picking my nose and scratching myself. I have also been taught to wash my hands after I shook hands, grabbed something off the ground and putting something in a garbage reciprocal. I also need to wash my hands after handling raw meat, unwashed food items and wiping off my hands with a cloth meant for wiping spills up. There are many instances in a day that give rise to reason for washing my hands; but do I actually do it? No.

I touch ATMs, dollar bills and doors all day at the college. I have to pull out chairs, push open washroom doors and sit upon chairs that somebody has occupied before me. I also sit at the same tables in the cafeteria and handle the same utensils as the hundreds of other students in the college have. I sit on the moveable seating furniture where I have seen people sleep. There are so many things at the college I access that so many other people do too.

A Brief Moment PDF Print E-mail

Ed Hardy is a wiener. He can draw, colour and create animalistic portraits, slap it on clothing and call it modern fashion. You may note that I write in such a manner that I sneer at his pop culture relevance but I too have bought his product.

I want to focus on my Ed Hardy underwear. It is green bordered with two vivid skulls strategically placed on the front and the back. They are the very first pair of Ed Hardy undies I have ever paid for (let alone worn) and frankly, I like it. I like the fact that I am wearing Ed Hardy undies. I like that fact I can tell people I own designer underwear.

Why am I compelled to tell people? Why am I so proud to own an article of clothing that has a rather taboo practicality? Why should I even take a moment to reflect on the purpose of having a such skull in places that only my boyfriend will ever see?

There is a small and dedicated group of local freestyle rapper itching for some stage time, according to local rap group facilitator David John. As part of a project with Future Cents, John is organizing a weekly rap group called Project Hope at the Yap Friends building at 1148 7th Avenue downtown from 3 to 4:30 every Wednesday.

“Rap is for anyone who wants to come in. Any age,” John said of the group. “People can come in and rap and freestyle. If there are any break-dancers they can come and dance if they want to.”

John has lived in Prince George for around six years, after moving from a reserve community in order to attend school. In that time, he said that he’s noticed a lot of people who enjoy rapping but have no place to do it. John himself is a big fan of rap and hip hop music.

Yeah I know they are a band from Australia, but the phrase will always refer me to the  title song from the 1988 EP from the BC band Nomeansno that the Aussies named their band after.  That is until today, I just found out that the universe is missing.

Physicists and astronomers have always been moping about the parts of the universe they can’t find. Dark matter, the missing mass and now even dark energy but recent observations have shown that almost all of it is missing.  We now think that 96% of the universe is unobserved. So basically the universe we see and interact with is like the part of a bottle of Quebec purchased Alcool TM  (a 96% alcohol beverage) that doesn’t get you drunk.

The dark stuff does not interact with the electromagnetic spectrum, but it does interact with objects we can observe through the force of gravity.
